Reforestation and Conservation Project

After the horrible haze blighted us for several months, Year 3 Learners at Nexus International School wanted to see if they could make a difference because “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men [people] to do nothing.” Learners found out about how the haze affected orangutans from Miss Suan from WWF-Malaysia and felt empowered to make a difference.  Learners learnt about the orangutans in Borneo and in particular Sabah. They produced a wonderful array of information booklets looking at the habitat, diet and appearance. They then went onto learn how the orangutans are currently endangered due to deforestation and palm oil manufacture  et cetera. After this, learners felt they had to act before it was too late. Learners decided to raise money and awareness to stop this injustice by having a WWF fundraiser where they shared their learning, adverts and sold smoothies. It was a highly successful event where the learners raised over RM2000 from the sales of smoothies, merchandise, Zumba event (Miss Maria) and other contributions.

A big thank you to all of those involved in making this possible especially Miss Nazneen who contributed a lot of time and effort. It is important to raise learners who feel they can have an impact upon the future!

WWF-Malaysia sincerely thanks Nexus International School for their valuable and generous support of our reforestation and orang-utan conservation efforts.
