5 Super Steps to Become a Real-Life Superhero

Dec 6, 2017
Mr Will Hodson doesn’t have superhuman strength nor teleportation powers, but he is a superhero to every child he meets. With a bicycle as his loyal sidekick, Mr Hodson introduces himself as Super Cycling Man. Comic books will tell you that every superhero has a mission, but Super Cycling Man has three goals to fulfil.

Mr Hodson’s first mission is to become the first person to cycle across all seven continents. Starting with his hometown in London in 2015, the idea of his world cycle adventure came from enjoying smaller bike adventures when he was a teenager. “I’m grateful that my parents said ‘Yes, go and do that!’ because many would say it’s risky,” he reflects. “I hope parents would support their children even though their plans sound crazy or dangerous”.

His second mission is raising £100,000 in donations for various Parkinson’s charities including the World Cancer Research Fund, World Bicycle Relief, Sustrans and Parkinson’s UK. Driven by his father’s two-decade battle with Parkinson’s disease, he admires Parkinson’s UK’s recent campaign called ‘Up Your Friendly’ that invites everyone to be more patient. “Some people with Parkinson’s might be shaking a bit or dropping money when they try to pay. Just by being patient, compassionate and understanding can make a big difference to them”. Without missing a beat, he added that the donations will support scientific research and therapeutic gymnastics for the patients.

Inspiring young children with school visits around the world is his favourite mission of all. Championing the message #WeCanAllBeHeroes, it was a children’s superhero book titled Max that inspired his positive movement. “The book said that the world needs more small superheroes doing quiet deeds. I thought that’s a very powerful message to get across to children,” he explains while sharing that a cape is unnecessary to become a hero. “Everyday people can make a big difference by doing small things. We are more powerful than we think”.

How to Become Your Own Superhero?
From displaying acts of kindness to practicing healthy eating, Super Cycling Man expressed five ways your child can become a real-life superhero.

1. Be kind to others
Every one of us is blessed with the gift of kindness. Being generous and extending a helping hand are great ways to turn the wheels of kindness. “We can all be superheroes by helping someone in need, turning off the lights or smiling often”.

2. Be resilient
When faced with challenges, we have to bounce back with resilience. Teach your child about resilience by creating a daily routine to follow, encouraging positive motivation and focusing on the journey in achieving their goal.

3. Dream big
Every goal and ambition begins with a dream. At 15, Super Cycling Man and his friends cycled across Europe - with his parent’s support. “Children are best when allowed to go on adventures responsibly,” he reveals. As parents, believing in your child’s biggest dream is the motivation they need to discover their passion.

4. Stay active
A healthy lifestyle keeps most superheroes in shape. Whether your child is into skateboarding, playing basketball or running, transform their interest into a family lifestyle to keep them active.

5. Healthy eating
Healthy eating habits are important to keep your mini superheroes in shape. Increasing your child’s fruits and vegetable intakes are also great for boosting their energy and improving their wellbeing.
