One of the best parenthood moments is discovering your child’s talents and gifts. It’s akin to looking into the window of their unique characteristics that will someday shape your child’s truest self. It also serves as an important milestone in your child’s development. Identifying your child’s talent and gifts can be traced easily but as parents, how can we continue to nurture them the right way?

1. Discover the early signs of their talent
Identifying the early signs of your child's talent often lead to important discoveries. Whether it is influenced by their physical and personality traits (nature) or the environment they're raised in (nurture), every parent should play a part in exposing their child to various activities. For instance, a creative child may enjoy art lessons a lot more whereas an active child may find sports to be their thing. Finding out your child's interests require plenty of exploration that will lead you to early signs of their talents.

2. Allow their interest to blossom
Shining the spotlight on your child’s talents and interests is the next best step. Give them the freedom and opportunity to revel in their interest further and most importantly, on their own. If your child is interested in playing the drums, sign them up for an after-school music program. For children who are passionate about dancing, they can take up ballet or contemporary dance classes. As supportive parents, it also shows how much their interests mean to you.

3. Recognise and support their talent
Never underestimate the value of recognition. It goes a long way in contributing support and interest towards the things your child is passionate about. It also opens up a window of opportunity for parents to be a part of their child’s creative endeavour. When your child is showing positive progress or pass a test, be their best cheerleaders by praising them and acknowledging their hard work in achieving them.

4. Sharpen their talent through practice
As the old saying goes, ‘Practice makes perfect’. The best talents in the world are backed by years of hard work and determination to be where they are today. The best thing about doing what you love is that it won’t feel like work at all. Allow them to practice strumming the guitar, painting artworks, or playing soccer. Your child may stumble upon setbacks and mistakes along the way and when such situation arises, teach them that these challenges are part and parcel of learning.

5. Meet their inspirations
Aside from perseverance and motivation, the last ingredient to nurture your child’s talent is an inspiration. Mirroring the achievement and success of anyone inspirational can do wonders in creating positive morale in your child. If your child is into badminton, encourage your child to join one of many local badminton tournaments in the city. You can also take them to watch professional tournaments where they can meet their favourite badminton players whom they can aspire to be.
Nurturing your child’s talent requires more than a moment of acknowledgment. As your child is exposed to different ideas and activities, they’ll pick up an interest and pastime that excites them more than the rest. When you discover this, there are many ways parents can nurture it.
