How to ace starting school

Feb 3, 2020
Children who have started school over the last two weeks, could feel slightly anxious about meeting new classmates and teachers in a new setting.

Ever wondered how you as a parent can help make those days go smoothly?

Get kitted out
Go on a shopping spree together to shop the essential kit for school such as stationery, pencil case, lunchbox, shoes, bag, etc. Make it an exciting adventure rather than a sulk-inducing chore!

Ask, Listen and Learn
Ask about their feelings, both their excitement and worries. Highlight the positive aspects of school and reassure them that everyone gets nervous about their first week. Whether it’s starting primary, going up a year, or even a grown-up beginning a new job.

Help them to relate
For parents who have younger children, introduce your child to cartoon characters who are starting school too such as; The Pigeon Has to Go to School by Mo Willems, Brown Bear Starts School by Sue Tarsky and Marina Aizen and many more, for bedtime reads. Tell funny stories about your first days (best leave out any horrible bits, though!)

It Might Not Be Perfect
Most importantly, manage your expectations. Some things might not be perfect. Stay calm, kind and upbeat - even if you’re an emotional jelly underneath. It might be bittersweet but the new chapter will begin and everything will turn out fine!
