The Intensive English Programme at Nexus

May 14, 2018
As Nexus International School Malaysia enters its 10th year, it has many successes to celebrate and achievements to be proud of, not least the difference it has made in the lives of its students.

For some students, both local and international, English is a second language, maybe completely new. True to our mission, which is to provide support and challenge for all ability levels, Nexus developed the Intensive English Programme (IEP).

At Nexus, the IEP is designed to provide social and academic English instruction to new learners with little to no previous understanding or learning in the English language. Learners will receive around 15 lessons per week of English language instruction. These lessons will provide a gentle integration into the Nexus Way of learning, and the different culture surrounding them, whilst building up their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Continual assessment will help to monitor their development. As their reading and writing improves, they will slowly have more time in class with their teachers and fewer lessons in the Intensive English Programme.

The learning will follow Nexus’ own English as an additional language curriculum, specifically based around the four language skills, focussing especially on the importance of reading and seeing reading as a fun activity whilst also helping the learners be more comfortable with the language in a relaxed setting.

We understand how overwhelming it can be as a new learner. It is always hard starting a new school, but so much harder and frustrating when language is a barrier. Communication becomes a burden alongside the cultural differences one will come across that you and your family will have to cope with.

The IEP hopes to bridge the gap and provide support to the family as well as the learner, to teach about the new language, culture and way of learning whilst still respecting the home language and culture. The slow integration of the learner into the mainstream classroom should tackle any of these difficulties or differences before they become problems. The IEP focuses on the holistic approach, developing the person, rather than just the learning. This should help the learner to feel more confident and able when they finally leave the programme.

For Nexus as a school, by all accounts, 10 years is still a young age but the achievements by the school and its students are certainly noteworthy and should serve as an indicator of what is to come. The IEP is just one successful milestone and it will continue to innovate and act as a foundation to greater success.
