Stress-wise

Mar 1, 2018
Stress occurs when pressure exceeds the perceived ability to cope. Each person has different level of coping mechanism. Sometimes it gives us positive energy, motivates us to complete the tasks and inspires us make our dreams achievable.

However, stress may develop into a negative energy and causes distress. If we are in a distressed state, we can be reactive as opposed to being responsive with our daily encounters. Consequently, this can set off a ripple of negative emotions such as depression, hurt, anxiety, frustration or anger within us and to others.

When one comes face to face with stress, These are some of the steps you can take to manage it.
  1. Step back from the situation.
  2. Take deep breaths and count to 10
  3. Do a self-check. Ask yourself what is making you feel this way?
  4. Then do a positive self-talk. Reaffirm yourself eg: ‘I can do this’, ‘I’ll do the best I can’, ‘I’ve got this’.
  5. Take a break from the situation and handle it later when you are more calm
Evidently, there are many ways to manage stress such as relaxation, exercises, healthy food, time management, good sleep, positive thinking and lots of fun. But most of all, one of the healthy options to decrease distress contagion effect is being self-aware of our own pressures and distress feelings, and then take responsibility to get through it.

Malou Bromley, our Nexus Whole School Counsellor was the guest speaker on Stress Management in the Australian National Leaders' Summit, an initiative organised by the Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia, held in KDU. One of the student leaders who organised the event was our former learner Kenny Ng.

It was an interactive gathering which covered issues concerning parental pressures, healthy/unhealthy stress and the impact of culture, family and technology on stress and how to get through it.
