Global citizenship

Global citizenship is the belief that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to the global community and help build a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world. At Nexus International School Malaysia, we see global citizenship as a vital part of every learner’s education and we work to develop a global perspective in all aspects of school life.

Becoming Global Citizens

What Global Citizenship Looks Like at Nexus

At Nexus, global citizenship is woven into our curriculum and school culture. Our diverse community of over 35 nationalities celebrates cultural diversity through events and activities that teach learners to respect different cultures and viewpoints. Service learning projects let learners make a positive impact locally and globally, tackling issues like poverty and environmental sustainability. We also promote international-mindedness through field trips, guest speakers, and cultural events.

Model United
Nations (MUN)

The Nexus Model United Nations Conference (NISMUNC) is one of Malaysia’s largest student-led MUN events, fully organised by Nexus Year 10 to 13 learners. From planning and promotions to logistics and fundraising, this remarkable initiative nurtures leadership, creativity and teamwork, as they take full ownership of an event that mirrors real-world diplomacy and collaboration.

The annual event hosts approximately 200 participants from schools across Malaysia gathered for a series of workshops, debates and discussions on global issues ranging from sustainability and human rights to international security. Through these sessions, delegates developed essential skills in critical thinking, communication and negotiation.

Service Learning

Our learners participate in service learning projects that allow them to make a positive impact in their community and beyond. These projects are organised as part of the curriculum through a range of activities and external organisation visits arranged by our Director of Global Citizenship. Apart from school activities, learners also participate in school trips and activities outside of the school ranging from local initiatives like food drives and clean-up campaigns to global projects that address issues like poverty, environmental sustainability and access to education.

International
-mindedness

Our student body represents over 35 nationalities, and we proudly celebrate this rich diversity through a variety of cultural events and activities throughout the year. At Nexus, learners develop an appreciation and respect for different cultures and perspectives, an essential foundation for becoming true global citizens.

We promote international-mindedness by offering opportunities for learners to explore and experience cultures from around the world. This includes sessions with guest speakers, overseas learning trips and visits to local museums and cultural sites. Major Malaysian celebrations such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas are marked with community-wide festivities that bring everyone together. The year culminates with our much-anticipated International Day, where the entire school community celebrates cultural diversity through food stalls organised by the Parent Teacher & Friends (PTF), a vibrant cultural fashion show and performances from school bands that showcase the spirit of unity in diversity at Nexus.

UN Sustainable
Development
Goals Day

Global Goals Day is a whole-school, off-curriculum event where learners from Early Years to Secondary unite to explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through hands-on projects, discussions and creative activities. Learners take part in initiatives such as designing sustainable cities, creating eco-friendly products from recycled materials, hosting awareness campaigns on gender equality and developing prototypes for clean energy solutions. These meaningful experiences encourage critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving as learners address real-world challenges. Reflecting the Nexus ethos of global citizenship and purposeful learning, Global Goals Day empowers every learner to become a changemaker who transforms ideas into impactful action for a better world.

Shaping A Sustainable Future

Global goals day
