About Us
Embracing Diversity,
Challenging Minds
At Nexus, our child-centred philosophy is at the heart of everything we do, it enables children to take risks, make mistakes and challenge themselves to learn in a way that is unique to them.
What Make Us
Special?
Nexus International School Malaysia is a learning focused school, empowering learners through the Nexus Way. The community encourages its learners to embrace diversity and to be open-minded so that they are prepared for the challenges ahead as future global leaders. Relationships, Innovation, Inclusion and Mindsets – these are the four elements that make the Nexus Way, which guides the Nexus community.

Nexus Mindset
Whole Child
Development
We believe that developing a set of general competencies and a positive mindset underpins academic success as well as happiness and personal growth. Developing children as effective learners requires paying attention to developing their attitudes, skills, strategies and behaviors as well as their content knowledge and academic skills. Nexus balances academic demands with an emphasis on growing good citizens. We help our learners to become self-aware and to develop the skills for good decision-making.
There are two frameworks for developing competencies and mindsets at Nexus, the Nexus Neuron and Personal Goals in Primary and the IB Learner Profile in Secondary. These frameworks are explicitly taught and assessed in the classroom by our teachers, to develop independent, self regulated learners.
Intrinsic Motivation
At Nexus, we take a different approach to recognising success. Rather than relying on external rewards like house trophies or academic rankings, we focus on developing intrinsic motivation, encouraging learners to engage in activities because they find them meaningful, interesting or personally fulfilling. For example, a learner may solve a complex problem not for a prize, but for the satisfaction of overcoming a challenge.
That said, we do value celebration and healthy competition. Our learners take part in exciting events such as Sports Days, inter-school competitions, maths challenges and talent shows, opportunities that build confidence, community and joy in shared achievement.

Nexus Relationships
Not students
but learners
As learning is the focus for everything we do, children at Nexus are referred to as learners. Furthermore we emphasise that our teachers develop a learning focused relationship “a relationship between teacher and learner, where both the teacher and learner want to work together and know how to work together on the learning”. (Absolum 2008)
The learner’s role in the relationship is only to learn. The learner focuses on “what has to happen that will best help me to learn?” The teacher’s role is only to help the learner learn. The teacher focuses on “what do I need to do now that will best help this student to learn?”
In order to promote a culture of respect throughout the school there is a joint responsibility of care for all staff members towards the learners and at Nexus we follow the principles of Restorative Practice. Restorative Practices are based on principles that emphasize the importance of positive relationships as central to building community and involves processes that repair relationships when harm has occurred. This culture of respect is also specifically taught through the Personal Goals in Primary and through the Personal and Social Development (PSHE) Programme in Secondary.
Mentoring
and Guidance
In Primary, class teachers are responsible for the well being of all the learners in their class. In Secondary, learners have a form tutor who supports and guides them as they progress through the school. Some learners have an academic mentor who supports them on an individual basis. Further pastoral support is provided for learners and parents by the Mile Post Leaders in Primary and Phase Leaders in Secondary along with the respective Heads of School.
Counselling
Our in-house school counselor is an integral part of Nexus and she provides social-emotional counselling. Our aim is to enhance and support the intellectual, social and emotional growth through a caring and balanced environment, as well as provide social-emotional counselling for learners who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. The Counselors also communicates, co-operates and collaborates with teachers, parents and other professionals to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to achieve school success.
Parents as Partners
We are firmly of the view that there are three groups of people involved in educating young people: teachers, parents and the wider community. At Nexus we have a very active Parent Association and we regularly invite parents to attend workshops run by staff. These workshops are designed to help parents understand our learning philosophy and values so that they can better support their children at home.

Nexus Inclusion
Embracing Diversity, Challenging Minds
We believe that children benefit from diversity and that all children deserve an excellent, child-centered education. At Nexus you will see learners working together and caring for others in a supportive environment in and beyond the classroom. The world is not homogenous and our learners develop a deep empathy and understanding for difference.
Our inclusive admission policy means that learners are widely varied in their abilities, skills and needs. In order to develop the varied gifts and talents of our learners, the learning journey itself is inclusive. We do not agree that simply including learners physically in the classroom is enough.
Differentiation
We can expect that some learners will be working on skills at Mastering level (A*) and others at Pre-foundation (G). Therefore we design the learning experiences, using a range of differentiation strategies, to ensure all learners achieve their best and are challenged appropriately. The use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction.
Additional Support
Specialist teachers work in class alongside teachers to give additional support for children with language and/or learning needs. At Nexus we believe that an individual’s intellectual and personal growth are both complementary and inextricably linked and we do all we can to help learners develop their confidence and achieve their personal best.
- EAL and Special Needs trained teachers co-plan to support delivery of differentiated learning experiences as well as working with learners in class alongside the classroom/subject teachers.
- Personal Learning Assistants (PLAs) in Primary classrooms help integrate learners on the autistic spectrum & with other complex learning needs with the learning journey.
- The Alternative Pathway program (AP) in Secondary provides specialist programs so that children with complex learning needs can continue their learning journey at Nexus alongside the mainstream curriculum.
- Highly able learners are supported to extend their learning through enrichment opportunities as well being challenged at Mastering levels in the classroom.

Nexus Innovation
Apple Distinguished
School since 2015
The recognition of Nexus International School Malaysia by Apple Inc. as an Apple Distinguished School since 2015 highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages learners and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. Students at Nexus are called ‘learners’ for a reason. They are not passive recipients or consumers of content; they are actively involved in the process of finding, creating and understanding content.
Technology use is part of how we work at Nexus, but it does not define how all learning is delivered. We encourage our teachers to think about how to use technology effectively, so that it enhances engagement and the learning experience. Across the school technology integrators guide teachers and work with learners in lessons to embed technology to deepen the learning experiences.
Overall, we use technology in three ways:

We use digital tools to create and access resources and share those with the learners. Our learner centred active learning approach truly comes alive when supported by carefully curated digital learning tools.

We use technology to connect with parents. Video, blogs, online reporting and booking systems support collaboration and communication between teachers, parents and learners.

We make 21st Century education a reality. We help to develop learners in the use of technology and help them skillfully navigate today's information terrain in a global world.
Our teachers are part of a global community of education leaders recognised for doing amazing things with technology in and out of the classroom. They explore new ideas, seek new paths and embrace new opportunities.
