BMCC Sustainability and Leadership Conference Led by Nexus Learners

The British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) Sustainability and Leadership Conference at Nexus International School Malaysia brought together over 160 participants from across Malaysia, including industry partners and international schools. Fully organised by Nexus Year 12 learners, the conference transformed the campus into a space for collaboration, where workshops, panel discussions and exhibitions explored sustainability through real-world perspectives.

Learners took on a wide range of responsibilities throughout the process, from coordinating with partners and inviting speakers to facilitating sessions and overseeing logistics on the day. Balancing these roles required strong organisation, adaptability and clear communication, contributing to a well-executed and impactful event experience. Their ability to maintain a clear vision reflected a high level of ownership and accountability, ensuring that each element aligned with the overall direction of the conference.“

It helps learners build confidence, form meaningful connections, and develop the ability to thrive in their future pathways, while promoting sustainability,” shared Afia Kher, who is the Nexus Year 12 learner who led the organisation of the conference. Her role in guiding the team highlighted how learners are able to step into leadership positions and take initiative in meaningful, real-world contexts, while navigating challenges and making informed decisions throughout the process.

Held in collaboration with over ten corporate and community partners, including World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia, Rose Foundation, MareCet, Sunda Shelves, and Morph Outdoors, the conference gave the opportunity for Nexus learners to work closely with these partners, offering valuable insights into sustainability challenges, as well as building on their organisational skills. These interactions allowed learners to better understand how sustainability efforts are approached across different sectors and industries, while gaining exposure to diverse perspectives and approaches.

A key highlight was a learner-led panel discussion featuring YTL Corporation Berhad and Women in Rail Malaysia, where learners took on the role of moderators, leading conversations on sustainability and transportation. The leadership opportunities from this conference are part of the IB Diploma Programme’s Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) component, where our Year 12 and 13 learners are required to initiate and lead projects that create real impact. Through organising and facilitating the conference, learners developed skills in leadership, communication, and critical thinking, while building strong portfolios that support university and scholarship applications.

The conference reflects how learners are empowered to take ownership of their learning, work alongside industry, and apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. As one of the top IBDP schools in Malaysia, consistently achieving results above the world average, Nexus prepares learners with the skills, mindset and global perspective needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
