Forest School in Malaysia: Learning through Nature at Nexus Primary

At Nexus International School Malaysia in Putrajaya, Primary learners from Early Years to Year 6 take part in the Nexus Forest School programme throughout the academic year, with exclusive access to their very own rainforest located within our 10-acre campus. Through regular nature-based learning experiences led by teachers trained and accredited by the UK’s Forest School Learning Initiative (FSLI), learners develop confidence, resilience and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Why Nexus Forest School in Malaysia Stands Out

Nexus Forest School offers learners much more than time outdoors. The unique programme which is one of the few Forest Schools in Malaysia gives learners from Early Years to Year 6 regular opportunities to learn through nature in a safe and inspiring environment.

Unlike one-off outdoor activities, Forest School is embedded into the Primary curriculum throughout the academic year. Every session is guided by teachers trained and accredited by the UK’s Forest School Learning Initiative (FSLI), allowing learners to develop confidence, resilience and independence through meaningful, learner-led experiences.

Nexus Forest School offers much more than time outdoors— it is an integral part of the Primary School learning experience. Rather than relying on occasional excursions, our Forest School sessions are embedded into the curriculum, allowing learners to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences in a meaningful way.

Guided by experienced and trained Forest School educators, learners develop essential life skills through hands-on, inquiry-based experiences that go far beyond outdoor learning and play. They learn practical forest school skills such as shelter building, safe tool use, including sawing, fire lighting and outdoor cooking, while strengthening problem-solving, teamwork, leadership and independent thinking. Regular time in nature also supports learners’ physical and emotional wellbeing by encouraging resilience, reducing stress and fostering mindfulness. Together, these authentic outdoor learning experiences reflect the Nexus philosophy of nurturing well-rounded, future-ready learners equipped with the confidence and life skills to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Outdoor Learning in Action

As learners progress through Primary School, Forest School activities become increasingly challenging, encouraging them to push boundaries and be outside of their comfort zones.

Some examples of Forest School activities from Early Years to Year 6 include:

  • Building shelters using natural materials
  • Crafting swings from tree branches
  • Identifying local plants and wildlife
  • Learning to safely build small fires under the guidance of trained teachers, progressing to preparing and cooking simple meals outdoors
  • Using real tools, such as saws and hammers, safely and responsibly to develop practical skills, confidence and resilience
  • Solving outdoor challenges through teamwork and problem-solving
  • Exploring woodland habitats through enquiry-based, hands-on learning

Each Forest School activity is designed with a clear learning purpose, enabling learners to apply creativity, critical thinking and communication skills in authentic, real-world contexts. Through hands-on experiences in nature, learners develop scientific enquiry, mathematical thinking and environmental awareness while making learning engaging, meaningful and memorable.

With hands-on activities, they develop creativity as we unleash their curiosity through exploration, problem-solving and meaningful experiences in nature.” — Harriet Munap, Forest School Learning Initiative (FSLI) Trainer

Why Forest School Learning Matters

Through Forest School in Malaysia, learners develop the confidence to take risks, the resilience to overcome challenges and the curiosity to explore the world around them.

By combining academic learning with nature-based learning and outdoor education, Nexus Forest School equips learners with the skills, mindset and environmental awareness to flourish both in school and beyond.
