At Nexus International School Malaysia, Learner Leadership is embedded throughout the school experience, from Primary to Secondary, through opportunities such as Student Council, learner committees, Model United Nations and learner-led Co-Curricular Activities. These experiences encourage learners to contribute to the community and develop skills beyond the classroom.
For Secondary learners completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS) requirements, learner-led Co-Curricular Activities provide opportunities to apply their interests while supporting younger learners.

With over 20 Learner Leadership initiatives available, learners gain valuable life skills through leadership and collaboration.
Through leading Co-Curricular Activities at Nexus International School Malaysia, learners are able to further sharpen their skills by teaching and mentoring others in their chosen fields of interest and strengths, aligned with their future aspirations and personal goals.
From sports coaching activities and debate clubs to STEM programmes, sustainability clubs, language support groups, performing arts and academic enrichment, there is a diverse range of Co-Curricular Activities offered where Nexus learners are able to share their expertise and strengthen their passion in their respective fields.
Tiffany Manivannan, a Year 12 learner, founded the Nexus Medics Society to help learners aspiring to enter healthcare with opportunities to explore medical topics through the Learner Leadership club she runs after school. Through this society, she has worked together with other learners to organise workshops and discussions for both learners and external stakeholders.

Similarly, Chloe, who leads the Nexus Eco Club, has organised sustainability-focused projects, awareness campaigns and hands-on activities linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the Learner Leadership Co-Curricular Activities, encouraging younger learners to consider the impact of their everyday actions on the environment.
Alongside Co-Curricular Learner Leaders, Nexus also offers a supporting and training role for Upper Secondary learners to take up the position of Assistant Leaders for selected activities. Assistant Leaders work alongside experienced Learner Leaders and teachers, helping them learn the ropes of how activities are organised and facilitated before progressing into larger leadership responsibilities.
A notable example of Learner Leadership in action was during a Sustainability Conference hosted by Nexus in partnership with the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), which was run by our Learner Leaders.
Learners took responsibility for planning and delivering the conference, including coordinating speakers, facilitating workshops, managing logistics and curating exhibitions that showcased sustainability initiatives developed through Nexus Co-Curricular Activities. The event brought together corporate representatives from BMCC, educators and learners from other international schools, creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue around sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Through the experience, learners gained practical exposure to project management, event planning, stakeholder engagement and collaboration while working with external organisations and diverse audiences.
For Afia Kher, a Year 12 learner who led the organisation of this conference, the experience provided valuable insight into managing a large-scale event while collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
The conference highlights how Learner Leadership can transform ideas into action, giving learners opportunities to apply classroom learning in authentic contexts while contributing to conversations that extend beyond the school community.
Nexus International School Malaysia’s commitment to Learner Leadership has also received wider recognition, including winning the Judges’ Choice Award (Student Leadership) at the ASEAN School Awards 2026, the Youth Leadership Enhancement Through Education category at the Global Education Awards 2025 and being shortlisted in the Tes Awards for International Schools 2025.
These achievements reflect the school’s commitment to empowering learners to take initiative, collaborate with others and contribute meaningfully to the communities around them.
From running Co-Curricular Activities and leading sustainability initiatives to organising large-scale events, learners at Nexus International School Malaysia are given meaningful opportunities to turn their ideas and passions into action.
These experiences gained through the Nexus Learner Leadership programme help learners develop important real-life skills and contribute positively to the school and community.
