Science Experiment: Milk Rainbow

After a day of cooking and cleaning, stir up some kitchen chemistry in your home with our easy-to-do science play. What happens when you drop food colouring and dish soap on a plate of milk? Follow these simple steps to colour up your weekend with a beautiful work of art.

What you need

  • A small carton of milk
  • Dish soap
  • A few cotton buds
  • A few bottles of food colouring (red, yellow, blue and green)
  • A transparent dinner plate

What to do

  1. Pour milk on a dinner plate
  2. Squeeze a drop of each food colouring in the middle of the plate
  3. Dip the tip of the cotton bud with dish soap
  4. Place the tip of the cotton bud onto the food colouring
  5. Watch the colours swirl on the milk
