Learners at Nexus International School Malaysia took to the stage at SIRENS: A Vocals Voyage, a vocal showcase inspired by the ocean and its tides of memory, dreams, love, loss and longing.
Over twenty five Year 6 to Year 13 learners performed with confidence and creativity, presenting a thoughtfully curated repertoire of songs by renowned artists. Their performances reflected musical growth, discipline and artistic expression, demonstrating the progress and dedication nurtured within the school’s vocal programme. Each performance highlighted the learners’ developing technique, stage presence and collaboration as both soloists and ensemble performers.
Beyond the music, the showcase carried a meaningful message. The evening celebrated learners’ voices that made a difference, raising awareness for the ocean and its fragile ecosystems. In keeping with the ocean-inspired theme, proceeds from the event were donated to the Marine Research and Conservation Foundation (MareCeT), a Malaysian organisation dedicated to protecting marine mammals and their habitats, reflecting how the learners’ talents can extend beyond performance to support important environmental efforts.
Throughout the showcase, learners presented a repertoire that spanned genres and generations. Performances featured songs by renowned artists including Laufey, Evanescence, Celine Dion and Judy Garland.
Learners also brought to life iconic musical worlds such as Les Misérables, Cats, The Little Mermaid, Moana, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and EPIC: The Musical, creating a dynamic showcase of vocal storytelling.
Each performance reflected careful preparation, perseverance and the courage to communicate meaning through music. The voice, often considered the most personal instrument, offers both intimacy and dramatic power and the evening demonstrated its versatility across a wide range of musical styles and traditions.
Curated by Sarah Iman, Vocal Coach in the Nexus Music Department, and supported by the Peripatetic Music Team, the showcase provided learners with valuable opportunities to refine their vocal technique, build confidence and further develop their artistry in a supportive and inspiring setting. The continued growth of the school’s vocal provision has enabled more learners to explore their potential and gain meaningful performance experience.
Through events such as SIRENS: A Vocals Voyage, Nexus learners are encouraged to use their creativity with purpose, sharing their voices not only to entertain, but to inform, inspire and contribute to the wider community. The showcase reflected how music education at Nexus empowers learners to grow as confident performers, thoughtful individuals and responsible global citizens.
