When the final curtain fell on The Jungle Book, the applause echoed throughout the theatre. Building Confidence Through Performing Arts
One of the most powerful benefits of a Primary School production is the confidence it helps learners develop.
For many children, performing on stage in front of a large audience was a completely new experience. Through their involvement in Performing Arts, Nexus learners are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, express themselves and discover talents and strengths they may not have realised they had.
For Rika Mizuno, who played Mowgli, the experience was both exciting and nerve-wracking.
“I was very excited but nervous at the same time because there was a large audience looking at me.”
While the spotlight may have felt daunting at first, Rika’s experience reflects the journey many learners take throughout a Primary School production. Through rehearsals, encouragement from teachers and the support of fellow cast members, learners gradually developed the confidence to perform in front of others and embrace new challenges.
The skills developed through Performing Arts often extend into other areas of school life, helping learners become more confident communicators, presenters and learners.
Learning the Value of Teamwork Through Performing Arts
Just like the characters in The Jungle Book, Nexus learners quickly learned that success depends on working together.
From performers and vocal ensemble members to costume creators and technical crew, every learner contributed to the success of the Primary School production. Through Performing Arts, rehearsals encouraged learners to communicate effectively, solve problems collaboratively and support one another through challenges.
Working towards a shared performance also helped learners develop a stronger sense of responsibility and appreciation for one another’s contributions. Whether centre stage or behind the scenes, every role was essential.

The creative journey experienced in the Nexus Primary School production also taught learners the value of perseverance. For Giulia Berardi, who played Shere Khan, one particular song in The Jungle Book proved especially challenging.
“For one of the songs, the timing was a bit hard and fast, so I had to learn the right timing. It took a lot of time to understand and get it right.”
Like many aspects of a Primary School production, mastering the song required patience, focus and repeated practice. By working through the challenge, Giulia developed resilience, determination and performance skills, while gaining a deeper appreciation for the commitment needed to bring a performance to life.
