End of Year Treat at Sunway Lagoon

Tuesday, August 14, 2018
WOW…...we cannot believe that we have had our very last boarding weekend activity of the year; the school year has gone so quickly and it was brilliant to end on a high, with an epic whole house trip to Sunway Lagoon! We departed early in the morning so that we could make sure we had enough time to work our way through the water park, theme park and the zoo – all the boarders (and staff) were very keen to arrive and get on the thrilling rides.

Although the weather was not great that did not stop everyone from jumping straight into the water and queuing up for various slides and rides. The biggest and scariest ride was the ‘Vuvuzela’ which is eleven stories high, full of twists and turns and then a huge dramatic drop as you come to the end of slide!

After an exciting and exhausting day, we drove back to the boarding house and all ordered some pizzas as a Saturday night treat.

On Sunday, the boarders went on their final shopping mall trip before heading home at the end of the week. In the afternoon luckily the weather was sunny so that we could all head out to the sports field for a big game of rounders.

It was really enjoyable having everyone involved in an outdoor activity and we finished off the afternoon with a quick litter pick and recycling sort following Party in the Park which was held two nights ago.

Party in the Park Success
For the second year running Party in the Park was held last Friday evening and although the rain held up proceedings for an hour, the Nexus’ Got Talent Competition and Rock Concert still took place with all performances of a high calibre.

Jasslyn and Sally were members of the K-Pop Dance Group V-SCENT who won the Secondary School Nexus’ Got Talent 2018 award.

Well done to all on and backstage who contributed to another successful evening.

Year 12 International Award Expedition
Recently, a few of my classmates and I went on a caving and hiking expedition in Mulu for our IA Gold Qualifying Trip. Prior to the trip, we prepared ourselves both mentally, physically, and strategically gathered enough sustenance for the next 4 days and 3 nights. We hiked more than 19 kilometres on the first day, and collectively hiked more than 50 kilometres on the whole trip.

Getting the opportunity to access Mulu's beautiful caves, such as the Deer Cave, Lang Cave, and Clearwater Cave, was breathtaking as we witnessed the sheer size of these caves up close. The best caving experience of all was crawling commando-style through tight spaces during adventure caving, and carefully jumping from rock to rock to cross the cave grounds in pitch darkness (with our headlights on of course). We cannot forget the highlight of our trip which was an 8 hour hike to the Pinnacles. The 2.4 kilometre hike up and down the hill comprised of sliding over rocks, tackling ropework and a multitude of ladders resulted in incredibly sore legs the day after.

Overall, it was a memorable experience which pushed us to our limits.

End of Year BBQ & Celebrations
Last Wednesday we all enjoyed a splendid BBQ dinner which houseparents prepared and cooked. Following the meal Dream and Wenhao performed a guitar and harmonica duet, as well as Rene, Sally, Yubin and MK who played brilliantly as a quartet on the violin.

To complete the evening our Term Three Boarding Champion Trophy was jointly awarded to Callie and Maheem for their dedication towards their studies, positivity and overall contribution towards Boarding.
