A Beethovenian Concert Night with PJPO

Thursday, September 14, 2017
Last Summer, Qi Xuan was thrilled to have the opportunity to play the famous Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 ‘The Emperor’ as the soloist accompanied by the Petaling Jaya Philharmonic Orchestra (PJPO) under the baton of Mr. Lam Siu Chong. The concert took place on the 23rd of July, 2017 at Dewan Sivik Auditorium and was attended by an audience of no less than 600 people. The concert was later deemed successful as an encore was requested by the audience after the orchestra struck the last Eb major chord of the 40-minute long Emperor Concerto and their request was fulfilled by the pianist with Chopin’s Etude opus 10 no. 1 “Waterfall”.

Qi Xuan began playing the piano at the age of 5 under the tutelage of Ms. Jessica Ng at Khoo Academy of Music & Art. After obtaining his LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London) in solo piano performance with distinction, he furthered his piano studies with Mr. Khoo Siow Chuen and eventually gained his FTCL (Fellowship of Trinity College London) at the age of 16. Realizing the importance of exposure in his development as a versatile pianist, Qi Xuan began to participate in piano competitions as well as music festivals when he was 14 and his effort was fruitful when he won the gold award at the Asia Piano Competition 2013 which was held in Taipei, Taiwan. Besides piano, he also indulges in violin playing and has also obtained his LTCL in violin performance with distinction. He is also a member of the Permata Seni Muzik (PSM) and has performed with the orchestra as a 1st violinist in China, Kazakhstan, Germany and Turkey. His first engagement with the Petaling Jaya Philharmonic Orchestra in 2015 culminated in a successful performance of the Yellow River Piano Concerto, featuring him as the soloist.

On the other hand, Qi Xuan is also an all-rounded scholar who was awarded the prestigious Anugerah Tunas Jaya Kebangsaan (National Outstanding Youth Award) as the sole male winner of the year and Anugerah Kecemerlangan Kokurikulum (National Award of Excellence in Co-Curricular Performance) by the Ministry of Education of Malaysia for his active participation and impressive achievements in co-curricular activities. On top of that, he was the student leader and head prefect of his school who emerged as the top student when he scored 10A+ in SPM 2016. He is currently studying at Nexus International School as an IB year 12 student.
