Volunteers to the fore at Free Tree Planting Society

Monday, September 24, 2018
On the weekend two groups of Boarders accompanied Mr Dan and Ms Ainslie to the Free Tree Planting Society (FTS) in Bangsar. Our aim was  to “take seeds, sprout them, look after the seedlings, then giveaway all the plants for free, simply to encourage a love of nature”.
The Tree Planting activity was unexpectedly fun... despite the very hot weather! We learned how to plant the seedlings and learned how to take care of it. We were also taught to make fertilisers from fallen leaves and branches. Not only that, we also were able to experience cutting banana stem and leaves.

The feeling of being able to take part in conserving the environment makes me really satisfied. If everyone contributes in doing small actions to conserve the environment it will make a big change. The FTS have lots of different events; focusing on educating others about the environment. We were lucky enough to be able to take some plants back to boarding.

Breakfast Club
This weeks first breakfast club of the year saw the boarders learn how to make their favourite ‘American Style’ fluffy pancakes. They had a choice of toppings such as; blueberries, chocolate, strawberries and syrup!

One by one they had the chance to help with the mixing and then have a go at flipping their pancake - which they were all very successful!

Plenty going on over the weekend
Council representatives Zen and Lillian organised some fantastic activities for all the boarders to take part in at the weekend. On Saturday night everybody had a chance to get creative and make some traditional paper lanterns. They were made using coloured card, cut into pretty shapes and then taped and hung up around the common area.

On Sunday night, the boarders were in the kitchen; making their version of an ice-cream moon cake. They used a melon baller and sorbet to create the centre, then layered with different coloured ice-cream, then biscuit crumbs and then added to a cup. This was then frozen overnight and enjoyed Monday night after dinner!

It was a great opportunity for everyone to learn about the Mid-Autumn Festival and some of the traditions that are carried out.

Netballers perform well
On Tuesday the U16’s netball team featuring Ayla and Fatimah took to the court for the first time this term against Taylors Puchong. The girls maintained the lead throughout the game winning by 40-32.

Over the weekend the team including Reena, Ayla and Fatimah played in the U16’s AIMS netball tournament where they played many different schools from within Kuala Lumpur. Although they found the opposition more challenging, the opportunity to form different combinations for upcoming matches proved invaluable.

Houseparents accompanied a majority of boarders to Tutor Settling-In Day last Wednesday afternoon. The short meetings enabled tutors to discuss how each learner had ‘settled in’ to the school environment so far this term.
