Nexus Scores Outstanding IB Results for 2019

Aug 6, 2019
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is a two-year pre-university programme for learners aged 16-19 and is highly regarded by top universities worldwide. Research by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in 2016 indicated that IB learners compare favourably with other pre-university programmes, adding that they are more likely to attend a top 20 university and also achieve a first-class honours degree.

The aim of the programme is to develop the academic success and personal development of the students. The curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, which are theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay. The curriculum encourages students to think independently and determine their own learning, become culturally aware, and engage with people in a globalised world.

As such, it is no surprise that IB students are also more sought after by top universities as they are seen as being more prepared for higher education. Nexus International School Malaysia has seen a fair number of its students enter universities such as Oxford University, the London School of Economics, Duke University, University of British Columbia, Nanyang Technological University, and many more.

This year, Nexus outperformed the world average for IBDP by 5 points with a Diploma average of 34.6 points. The worldwide average for IB Diploma is 29.6 points. A total of 31 learners sat for the IB Diploma in 2019, and almost one in four learners achieved a score of more than 40 points, placing them in the top 10% worldwide.

This year also marks the second time in three years that a Nexus learner has achieved the maximum IB score when Khoo Qi Xuan scored 45 points. He is one of only 213 students worldwide to achieve this, placing him in the top 1%. Adding to that, he is also a recipient (and first Malaysian) of the Karsh International Scholarship from Duke University in the USA to study Economics and Computer Science.

“Indeed, my journey with Nexus is one of personal growth and intellectual development, brimming with diversity and exciting challenges. My IB journey with Nexus will definitely be one of the most colourful pages in my book of life,” says Khoo.

Another top achiever, Lee Zhi Yang, who scored 42 points, said, “IB is a very rich and fulfilling programme as it offers a lot more extra-curricular activities which can help enrich you as a person. There are a lot of opportunities for you to grow and I felt I actually did grow a lot and it’s mostly possible due to the teachers at Nexus who helped me tremendously along the way.”
